Vixens strike on Lightning

The Melbourne Vixens have returned to form, defeating back-to-back reigning premiers Sunshine Coast Lightning, 62-52.

While the Vixens were slow out of the block, a timeout called early in the game allowed the team to regroup and re-energise to take the last seven goals of the first quarter, leading by three at the first break.

The lead and an inspirational performance from Nissan Player of the Match, Renae Ingles set the Vixens up for the 10-goal win in an upset for Lightning in Laura Langman's 200th.

With all players taking to the court across the game, the win was made all the better with the debut of midcourter, Lara Dunkley.

Defender Jo Weston was impressed with the team’s effort after a tough couple of weeks.

“We were disappointed with last week’s result, but I think the middle two quarters of this game were some of the best performances we’ve put out there this year,” said Weston.

“Some of the passages of play from our midcourt were spectacular and really showed the nice balance between control and flair.

“Defensively, we worked really hard to shut down all of their options and stop that really good flow that the Lightning are known for.

“I love playing on Steph (Wood), she’s just so smart out on court. I did try my best to frustrate her, break that connection and play my role.”

The Vixens now have an eight day break ahead of their Queen’s Birthday clash against Collingwood Magpies – a great game to get along to as we support Fight MND and celebrate our loyal members.

Tickets are limited but still available at Ticketek.
