Vixens off to winning start at summer shootout

Summer Shootout

The Melbourne Vixens have started their Summer Shootout campaign on a positive note, overcoming the Wakaito Bay of Plenty Magic by 12 goals on Friday afternoon 45-33.

Overcoming a five goal deficit at the first change to level the scores on the stroke of half time, a "pleased" Vixens coach Simone McKinnis rang the changes giving all players valuable court time.

"Emily (Mannix) in the first half did some really good stuff, and Alice as well," McKinnis said.

"It's just really important for them to get out there and know what it feels like, and to know what it's about."

After a slow first half, it was a lesser-known seven on court that turned the tide in the Vixens' favour, conceding just 12 second-half goals.

Carla Dziwoki relished plenty of opportunity in her new colours, partnering with both Karyn Bailey and youngster Alice Teague-Neeld.

Kate Moloney was impressive at both wing defence and, later, centre, while Jo Weston, Chloe Watson and Geva Mentor's defensive intent was crucial in the result blowing out into a double-figure margin.

"There are some really good signs," McKinnis said.

"Individually there were some really good performances, but I think, and I know in practice matches we have had that there has been some good combinations developing and different combinations."

The Vixens will next face the Tactix tomorrow morning at 9am in the first of three shortened matches on Saturday.
