The Melbourne Vixens will head into the World Cup break on a high after defeating the GIANTS, 66-57 in Sydney – their second win over the fourth-placed side this year.

While slow starts have been an issue for the Vixens this season, the team came out firing with a point to prove. Managing to break away early, the Vixens led by eight then 12 at the first two breaks. From then, the GIANTS struggled to keep up, taking their only bonus point in the final quarter.

Emily Mannix, who was named as a reserve for the Diamonds World Cup team this week, dominated with a league record of nine intercepts, leaving Caitlin Bassett and Jo Harten lost and rotating.

Shying away from the praise, Mannix credited her teammates’ efforts across the court.

“Today was a true display of a really good team effort,” said Mannix.

“Everyone was doing their job and we all had the trust that everyone was playing their role on their own opponent and coming together as a team.

“We managed to get out to a good start with a bit of hustle and bustle, but we were able to breakaway at the end of the first quarter and that put us in good stead for the rest of the game.

“Our mid-courters were tireless, controlling some amazing plays down the court and into the goalers who couldn’t be stopped.”

With Liz Watson, Caitlin Thwaites, Jo Weston, Kadie-Ann Dehaney (Jamaica) and Ine-Mari Venter (South Africa) heading over to Liverpool for the World Cup, the Vixens will re-group in just over four weeks, ahead of their Round 10 game against the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Melbourne.

As a double header with Collingwood Magpies' game against GIANTS Netball, Vixens fans can buy one ticket for two games at Ticketek.
