Em's 2022 defensive masterclass

Em Mannix review

With the season over it’s time to look back on the year that was for our Vixens – the next player in the firing line is stalwart defender Emily Mannix.

As far as clutch moments go, it’s fair to say Em has it down pat. While pulling in the intercept of her life to send us into the Grand Final was a key moment against the GIANTS in the preliminary final, her work prior to that moment shouldn’t go unnoticed - she reeled in three intercepts, two deflections and a rebound.

Throughout the home and away season Em amassed 43 deflections, credit to her impressive timing and reach to create havoc in defence. Her performance against the Swifts in Round 2 was another standout, claiming five intercepts, four deflections and three rebounds.

There’s no denying that Em is an all-round hard worker, her constant movement, quick footwork and ability to confuse the space once again on show throughout season 2022. Her read of the play and cleanliness enabled her to stay in the action and chip away at attackers to eventually force turnovers while her partnership with Jo Weston continued to flourish.

Em also showcased her versatility in 2022 with a couple of stints out in goal defence, including a huge performance against Fever in Round 4, utilising her long arms to inflict defensive pressure through the midcourt.

She also kept up her role as team morale officer, honing her post-match interview skills in the ice baths to deliver some outstanding Mannix Media episodes.
