Fever wipes out Vixens

After having to reschedule the game (originally due to play in Perth last month) the Vixens weren't able to match the in-form West Coast Fever tonight in Brisbane.

The first quarter was promising, with only two goals between the teams at the first break. It was the second quarter where the Vixens were 'punished', that set Fever up for the game, keeping the Vixens well out of reach.

With just over 24 hours' notice confirming the match, and being reminded of her 100th game this morning, Kumwenda didn't allow the milestone butterflies get in the way of her performance - she stood up and played her role, in the way only 'MJ' can, scoring 31 goals and four super shots.

Captain courageous, Kate Moloney put her body on the line, throwing absolutely everything at the game right until the final whistle. She was supported by first-year player, Hannah Mundy who continues to grow with each game, with the pair building a real connection out on court.

As always with Fever, the Vixens defenders had their work cut out for them, with the effort absolutely there, but every attempt falling only centimetres short of the hands of Fowler.

Head coach Simone McKinnis talked through the game, highlighting the second quarter run away by Fever.

"I was quite pleased with our first quarter; I thought we had great intensity and purpose around what we were doing.

"That dropped off in the second quarter, and we got punished. So then it was playing catch up which is very hard against a side like Fever.

"I think it’s the story of our season so far. Some good stuff, some patches and some not so good."

Simone was joined by new partner in crime, Lizzy Watson on the bench in an assistant coach role, which McKinnis said is much more to the group than instructing them what to do.

"Liz has been great - she's the same as she would be when she’s out on court with that calmness, that reading of the play and reading the game.

"It’s really valuable to have her as part of the group and she shows her leadership just as much off court as she does on the court."

As for her Malawian goaler, Simone spoke highly of the 100-gamer.

"MJ’s been phenomenal for us since she’s arrived. She’s such a unique player, brilliant with the ball and we’re just so happy and fortunate to have her play her 100th with the Vixens and to share that with her.

"It’s that energy, that passion that she brings to training, to everything we do. She’s a pretty special person and pretty special competitor."
