An inspired second half saw the Melbourne Vixens make the ultimate fight back, taking a win over the Queensland Firebirds, 71-60 in Queensland.

Trailing by three at half time and with two bonus points gone begging, the Vixens came out in the third quarter revitalised. With impressive defensive efforts from Mannix and Weston, the team took a 19-9 quarter, taking a seven-goal lead.

Mid-courter and co-vice captain, Liz Watson said while the Vixens executed what they had worked on, maintaining control was what let the team down in the first half.

“We’ve been talking about our starts a lot lately, and we’ve obviously wanted to make them better than the last few weeks,” said Watson.

“We did start the first quarter off well, but we let the Firebirds back in the game too easily, so at half time we spoke about making sure every time we get the ball, we needed to score off it.”

Watson praised goaler Caity Thwaites who was named Nissan Player of the Match.

“Caity was great, and as a mid-courter, to be on the circle edge and have Caity with that hold and the way her and Tegan move it makes it really easy for us to feed into them.”

Already looking to the final game before the World Cup break next week, Watson said the Vixens will look to head into the break with another win.

“The aim is to win and get as many points as we can so we can go into that break having set ourselves up for the second half of the season.”

The Vixens take on GIANTS Netball next week in Sydney, their final game before the World Cup break.

Send off the Diamonds at this week’s Open Training on Wednesday, 19 June at State Netball and Hockey Centre from 3.30pm.
