Another Victorian pathway product has earned a Melbourne Vixens contract, with squad member Emily Andrew today named as the team’s eleventh player for the 2024 season.

The eleventh player is a new initiative introduced this year, offering Super Netball clubs the opportunity to sign an additional athlete who can be brought into the match day squad for tactical purposes throughout the season, not just in the case of injury or illness to a contracted athlete.

At 191cm, Andrew is a mobile shooter who can play a holding or moving circle in either attacking position. The 21-year-old has been in the Vixens environment as a squad member since 2022 and was elevated to the match day squad twice in 2023 as a temporary replacement player.

Born in New York but raised in south-east Melbourne, Andrew’s athleticism and versatility have been demonstrated throughout her journey in the Victorian pathway. She has played in the Victorian Netball League since 2019 and represented Victoria at 17/Under (2020) and 19/Under (2021, 2022) level at the National Netball Championships.

Andrew was named the tournament’s most valuable player at the 2023 Australian Netball Championships, representing the Victorian Fury, a performance which saw her selected in the 2023-24 Australian 21/Under squad.

“Emily has been a valuable part of our team environment for the past two years, and it’s a great next step for her to further her development with us as our eleventh player,” said head coach Simone McKinnis OAM.

“Her mobility and versatility across both shooting positions can be hard to find in an athlete of Emily’s height, so she’s a challenging player for defenders to match up against and I’m excited to watch her make the most of this opportunity.”

“Emily’s journey through the Victorian pathway and into our Vixens environment has shown an impressive work ethic and appetite for soaking up everything she can learn. This opportunity is well-earned, it’s exciting for her and for our team as well.”

“I’m excited and grateful to the club and to Simone and Di especially for supporting me, they’ve really invested in my development through the pathway and I’ve grown a lot as a player being part of the Vixens squad over the past two years,” said Andrew.

“It’s such a welcoming and positive group to be part of, so I can’t wait to keep learning from my coaches and teammates this season and make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.”

The Vixens begin their 2024 campaign against the Melbourne Mavericks at John Cain Arena on Sunday 14 April.
