Weston reaches 50 international caps

Since debuting in green and gold at the Constellation Cup in 2015, Weston has been a stalwart of the defensive unit .

Throughout her Diamonds journey, Weston has collected silver medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2019 World Cup and is now striving for that elusive gold medal in Birmingham. Weston was also part of the winning 2021 Constellation Cup and 2022 Quad Series teams.

Australian Diamonds pool wrap –

Match 1: Australia (95) defeated Barbados (18)

The Diamonds got their 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign off to a hot start defeating Barbados by 77 goals. Liz Watson was influential through the midcourt, leading Australia out on court for the first time at the Commonwealth Games while Kate Moloney and Kiera Austin also made their Games debut.

Match 2: Australia (83) defeated Scotland (30)

Another strong performance from the Diamonds saw them cruise to a 53 goal win against Scotland. Watson was in charge through the middle again while Austin found her radar slotting 10 goals from 13 attempts. Weston was injected in the second half seamlessly switching from wing defence to goal defence.

Match 3: Australia (74) defeated South Africa (49)

The Diamonds were put under pressure against South Africa with the shooting combination of former Melbourne Vixens goaler Ine-Mari Venter and Lefébre Rademan putting in the hard yards against Weston and Courtney Bruce. Weston was a commanding presence, playing the full 60 minutes alongside captain Watson as Australia claimed a hard-fought win.

Match 4: Australia (79) defeated Wales (33)

Australia was put through its paces in the opening term against Wales before putting the foot down to gain some momentum in the second half. Kiera Austin didn’t miss a beat in wing attack with her crafty feeds into the circle. Watson moved from wing attack to centre while Moloney also pulled on the wing defence bib.

Match 5: Australia (55) defeated by Jamaica (57)

The combination of Moloney and Watson was once again on fire in Weston’s 50^th international cap. Despite holding a six goal buffer at three quarter time, a fast-finishing Jamaica toppled the Diamonds to finish top of the pool.

What’s next?

The Diamonds take on the hosts and defending Commonwealth champions, the England Roses, in a semi final clash at 11.30pm AEST on Saturday night.

Malawi Queens pool wrap –

Match 1: Malawi (41) defeated by England (66)

The Queens had a tough start to their Commonwealth Games coming up against the England Roses who wasted no time putting goals on the board. A hot start from the Roses gifted them a 10 goal lead and while Mwai Kumwenda worked her magic at the post, the Queens couldn’t combat England’s pace and skill.

Match 2: Malawi (54) defeated Northern Ireland (41)

Malawi got their first win on the board thanks to some crafty court work. Leading from the first break, the Queens refused to take the foot off the pedal while MJ was a commanding presence in the circle, nailing 29 goals from 32 attempts.

Match 3: Malawi (50) defeated by New Zealand (69)

It was neck and neck early with only five goals splitting Malawi and New Zealand at half time. In a valiant effort against the world number two, MJ controlled the airways once again with 27 goals from 31 attempts despite the long arms of Kelly Jury and Phoenix Karaka.

Match 4: Malawi (70) defeated Trinidad and Tobago (30)

The Queens claimed a dominant 40 goal win against Trinidad and Tobago, leading from start to finish. Piling on 17 goals in the opening quarter gave Malawi all the momentum they needed to set up the victory, MJ strong as ever under the post slotting 27 goals at 96% from her 30 minutes of action.

Match 5: Malawi (47) defeated by Uganda (56)

It was a tussle between the African nations as Malawi and Uganda went head-to-head, but in the end the She Cranes’ consistency got them over the line. Malawi was on the backfoot from the first quarter and while they reduced the buffer at half time, it was too little too late despite MJ’s 96% accuracy to post.
