Vixens go for gold in pre-season Ballarat Battle
The cross-town rivalry between the Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood Magpies will once again go regional in 2020, with the Vixens going for gold when they host the Magpies in a pre-season ‘Ballarat Battle’ on Sunday 5 April.
Presented by Ozito and held at the brand-new Ballarat Sports Events Centre, this will be the Vixens’ final hit out in Victoria before the season proper begins on May 2. It will also be the first and only pre-season meeting of the two Melbourne-based franchises, ahead of their blockbuster Round 6 clash.
After the success of the pre-season blockbuster weekend in Bendigo last year, Netball Victoria CEO, Rosie King, said she was excited to see a Melbourne Vixens game being taken to a new regional hub in 2020.
“Bringing elite netball to regional towns is such a great opportunity not only for the players to meet the fans who usually travel to see the Vixens play during the season, but also for young netball players to be able to see what is possible to achieve through our Victorian netball pathway.
“We had a fantastic turnout for our pre-season blockbuster weekend event in Bendigo last year, and so we are hoping the Ballarat community will show as much enthusiasm when the Vixens and the Magpies play again this year, and enjoy the new netball facilities right on their doorstep.”
Melbourne Vixens Head Coach, Simone McKinnis, added that that it would be a crucial on-court hit out for the team, just a month out from the start of the season.
“This pre-season match will give us another chance to really connect as a team and further test combinations and dynamics in the lead up to the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season.
“We aren’t in the same pool as Collingwood at the Suncorp Team Girls cup and we don’t play them [during the season] until Round 6, so it will be a great opportunity for both teams.”
Tickets for the Ballarat Battle go on sale next Friday 6 March, via Ticketek. All 2020 Melbourne Vixens Members will receive a 10% discount on ticket prices.
