Melbourne Vixens' and Netball Victoria's response to today's announcement from Netball Australia.
The 2022 season is the most competitive in our SSN history, with most teams still fighting for a finals berth. The drive to be at the top of the ladder can be partly attributed to the honour of hosting a home final in front of your fans, members, and family.
Today Netball Australia has stepped away from our usual approach – which is to award hosting rights to the winner of the major semi final – by confirming that the 2022 Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final will be hosted in Perth at RAC Arena on Sunday 3 July.
We know that many netball fans and club members across the SSN will be disappointed by this decision, particularly after two years of very limited live sport in most states due to the COVID pandemic. No doubt many in the Victorian netball community will be disappointed at losing the potential opportunity to host the Grand Final this year, and we share that disappointment.
That said, there’s plenty of netball to come this season. The Vixens are focused on our remaining two home and away games, and the chance to host a home semi final at John Cain Arena. If we earn a place in the Grand Final, we know our players and coaches will embrace the challenge regardless of which city we play in or the date that it is played.
Understandably many members and fans will have questions around how this decision impacts issues including ticketing and member entitlements. Netball Australia is working through these details, and clubs will share further information as soon as it’s available.
“We understand the netball community may be disappointed with this news, including our members and fans, but we’re backing our Vixens to stay focused on the matches to come and we look forward to cheering them on in an exciting Super Netball finals series,” said Netball Victoria and Melbourne Vixens CEO, Rosie King OAM.
“While we’re disappointed by this decision, we’re focused on winning our remaining home and away matches and earning a place in the Grand Final – regardless of where it will be played,” said Melbourne Vixens GM of High Performance, Rebekah Webster.
