Having finished third on the ladder, the Vixens have secured a home semi final against the Collingwood Magpies this weekend, in what will be the first Victorian finals battle in the history of Suncorp Super Netball.

Coming off the back of three consecutive losses, and most recently to the Collingwood Magpies on Sunday, the Vixens will head into the game with a new mindset and focus.

Taking on their cross-town rivals once again, midcourter Liz Watson said the loss on the weekend was disappointing, but she highlights there are always positives to walk away with.

“There’s always that rivalry between Vixens vs. Magpies, but that game on the weekend we were really disappointed with,” Watson said.

“Everyone put their hand up and said they didn’t perform at their best, but I think for that to happen in the season’s rounds is better than in a final, and we’ve definitely learned a lot from that.

“In this final, anything could happen, and we are definitely taking full confidence into the game.

“I think it’s just our consistency that has been lacking, especially in the attack end and attacking play down the court.”

Watson said head coach Simone McKinnis OAM had a clear message to the group ahead of the semi final which has cemented the belief she has in the team.

“Simone is good at keeping the group calm and consistent.

“She brought us in Monday and reset everyone and just put it in our head that we’ve earnt this final and this week we’re going to do everything that we can to put ourselves in the best position for the weekend.”

“We are confident heading into the game. I think in any sport in finals, it’s so different to the season.

“We earnt that third spot a long time ago and for us to know we’ve got this home final at a venue where we train every week, that’s also a bonus for us.

“I absolutely have so much confidence in this group and we’ll bring that on Sunday.”

“The State Netball and Hockey Centre is our home, we train here every week and the atmosphere is going to be amazing and full of Vixens fans.”

“We’re playing finals and no matter where we’re playing, it’s a final, so that is exciting. The girls definitely are looking forward to it.”

The Melbourne Vixens will host the Minor Semi Final against the Collingwood Magpies at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville on Sunday 1 September at 1pm.

Doors open at 11.30am, and parking is available to be booked here. Tickets are still available to purchase on Ticketek.
