The Melbourne Vixens have elevated training partner Maggie Caris as a temporary replacement player for Emily Mannix, who gave birth to her first child in January.
Hailing from Quantong, outside Horsham in Victoria’s Wimmera region, the 22-year-old defender stands at 190cm and has been a training partner with the Vixens since the 2022 season.
While no decision has been made regarding Mannix’s return following the recent arrival of daughter Mabel, Caris has stepped up into the main squad and impressed with her efforts across the pre-season so far.
“Maggie’s been super impressive throughout the pre-season,” said head coach Simone McKinnis.
“She’s got strong connections with her teammates and a great appetite to learn and develop her game, which holds her in good stead.”
“I feel really lucky to have been learning from the coaches and players at the Vixens for a few years now, and being in that training environment has helped me to develop my game so much,” said Caris.
“This opportunity is something I’ve been working towards and I’m grateful to Simone and Di [Honey] for backing me to step up while Em takes parental leave.”
“Coming into her fourth year as a training partner, Maggie has really taken this opportunity with both hands and it’s fantastic to see her commitment and hard work paying off,” said General Manager, High Performance and Pathways Sharelle McMahon.
“We back the strength of our Victorian pathway and our Vixens training environment, and seeing athletes like Maggie rewarded with opportunities at SSN level is a great reflection of that ongoing investment from Netball Victoria.”
The Vixens begin their Suncorp Super Netball campaign on the road against the Adelaide Thunderbirds on Saturday 5 April. They take on GIANTS Netball in their first home game at John Cain Arena in Round 2 on Sunday 13 April.
