Four Melbourne Vixens players have been named in the 12-strong Australian Diamonds team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Vixens co-captain Liz Watson will once again lead the Diamonds as they look to bring home the gold medal on one of the world’s biggest stages. Returning from navicular surgery this year, Watson’s composure and dominance through the midcourt has played a key role in the Vixens’ resurgence.

Joining Watson in the green and gold is stalwart defender Jo Weston. With 45 caps to her name, Weston’s experience is as invaluable as her ability to read the play and build defensive pressure through the court.

After tearing her ACL at the start of the 2021 season, new Vixens recruit Kiera Austin will make her highly anticipated return to international level. The exciting shooter can play both goal attack and goal shooter and is not afraid to back herself from long range.

Kate Moloney has also been selected to represent the Diamonds for the Commonwealth Games, rewarding her strong form in SSN. Our co-captain has showcased her versatility in recent weeks to seamlessly switch between centre and wing defence, and will bring her inspiring brand of leadership to the Diamonds squad alongside Watson.

“I am incredibly excited to be playing alongside some of the best netballers in the world, and I can’t wait to see what this team can do in Birmingham,” Watson said.

“We’ve all grown up watching and dreaming about the Commonwealth Games, and we hope to inspire the nation when we step onto the court to represent Australia.”

The Diamonds pre-Games camp will be held in Perth after the Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final with the Commonwealth Games to be held from Thursday 28 July to Monday 8 August. The netball competition will run from Friday 29 July to Sunday 7 August at the NEC Arena.
