This weekend is more than just a game for the Melbourne Vixens, being the first cross-town clash with Melbourne rivals, the Collingwood Magpies, as well as partnering with FightMND to help tackle the âBeastâ.
Following an inspirational speech from Bec Daniher, daughter of football legend and MND fighter, Neale Daniher, at training this week, defender Jo Weston says the team is setting themselves up for an almighty game, inspired by the messages from the Danihers.
âIt was really great to hear, firsthand from Bec and how the disease has affected her family.
âNeale has shown that fighting spirit and weâre really happy to be supporting something which is going towards finding, hopefully, a cure and clinical trials,â Weston said.
The Vixens are coming off a positive week after defeating a consistently strong Sunshine Coast Lightning and will look to up their record against the Magpies to 5-0.
âThe Magpies had some good wins, and theyâre also coming off a pretty large loss from the Swifts last weekend, so we think theyâll be coming out strong against us. Theyâve got such a star-studded line up, so itâs going to be a tough battle out on court.â
Hoping to cement their top four spot, Weston suggests there is plenty to take from their game last weekend.
âComing off the game against the Sunshine Coast Lightning, our defensive pressure across the court was phenomenal and thatâs probably something weâll look at implementing against the Magpies.â
âThey have a pretty strong target in Shimona at the back in GS, so as our defensive unit out the front of either Emily or KD, we want to be putting the players under the pump as much as possible and hopefully turning ball over that way.â
The Vixensâ game at 12pm will precede the AFLâs Queensâs Birthday clash where former Vixensâ defender, Bianca Chatfield will partake down the slide in the Big Freeze 5.
The FightMND beanies have sold out online but will be available to purchase at the Vixens game, while plenty of activities will be happening in The Den to raise awareness and funds for such a worthy cause.
The Victorian Fury will follow the Vixens at 2.30pm, taking on the Tasmanian Magpies.
