The Melbourne Vixens have announced young gun Zara Walters as their final signing, completing their 10-member team for the 2024 Suncorp Super Netball season.
An agile attacking midcourter, 20-year-old Walters is a product of the Victorian pathway and made her debut for Victorian Fury at the Australian Netball Championships in August.
Her consistently strong performances across the week-long tournament saw Walters lead the competition for feeds and earn selection in the Australian 21/Under squad, following previous selections in the national 17/Under (2020) and 19/Under squads (2021, 2022).
Hailing from Colac in Victoria’s south west, Walters has played for Geelong Cougars in the Victorian Netball League since 2019.
“Zara is a really exciting talent from the Victorian pathway and has earned this opportunity; her consistency across our programs is particularly notable for a young athlete,” said General Manager High Performance & Pathways Megan Simpson.
“We’ve been impressed with Zara’s growth over the past couple of years – her pace and change of direction are real strengths alongside her vision and feeding, and we’re looking forward to seeing her develop further in our team environment as we head into the 2024 season.”
“I’m always excited by the opportunity to coach emerging talent and Zara brings a lot of energy and speed to our midcourt group,” said Head Coach Simone McKinnis OAM.
“Zara’s appetite for learning and growth is a credit to her, I’ve been really impressed with her efforts in our pathway programs over the past few years and I think she’s a great fit for our group.”
“I am extremely grateful and excited to be a part of the Vixens in 2024. It’s a dream come true to be mentored by some of the best netballers in the world and play alongside them,” said Walters.
“I can’t wait to make the most of this opportunity and am looking forward to a successful year with the Vixens.”
