The Melbourne Vixens have revealed Australian Diamonds goaler Sophie Garbin as one of three new signings for the club ahead of the 2024 Suncorp Super Netball season.

Garbin made her national league debut for the NSW Swifts in 2018 and played 49 games across four seasons, before moving south to join the Collingwood Magpies where she played 27 games over the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Standing at 184cm, Garbin’s ability to play as both a strong holding shooter and as part of a dynamic moving circle will no doubt excite Vixens fans leading into 2024.

The 26-year-old played a crucial role in the Diamonds’ successful World Cup campaign in Cape Town this year, coming on with the game in the balance and sinking 27 from 33 attempts in partnership with new Vixens teammate Kiera Austin.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Sophie to the Vixens as we prepare for our 2024 campaign,” said General Manager High Performance & Pathways Megan Simpson.

“Sophie is an exceptional athlete who will add an exciting dimension to our shooting circle – we’ve seen a taste of her combination with Kiera Austin at international level and we know our members and supporters will be eager to see that connection develop across an SSN season.”

“Having an athlete of Sophie’s talent joining our club is exciting for us and for our fans,” said Head Coach Simone McKinnis OAM.

“We saw what Sophie’s capable of delivering in high pressure moments at the World Cup, and I’m looking forward to welcoming her into our environment and kicking off our preparations for season 2024 as a team.”

“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to pull on the navy and wear the Vixens dress, we have a really exciting squad including some of my Diamonds teammates who I have great connections with already,” said Garbin.

“I’ve had the challenge of being on the other side of both the Sargeant–McKinnis Cup and the Melbourne derby so I am excited to be on the right side of those matches now and playing in front of those massive Vixens crowds.

“I can’t wait to get stuck into training with the girls in the new year and build towards our first game at John Cain Arena.”

Further announcements regarding the Vixens’ 2024 list will be made in due course.
