The Melbourne Vixens delivered a strong performance at Red Energy Arena on Thursday night, defeating the Melbourne Mavericks 69-63 in a physical pre-season contest as part of the Bound 4 Bendigo showcase.

The Vixens controlled large periods of the match after an impressive opening quarter, before the Mavericks mounted a spirited comeback in the 3rd quarter to bring the contest back within reach.

The match also marked a special moment for the club, with fan favourite Emily Mannix returning to the court during the 3rd quarter for the first time since coming back from maternity leave. The event also marked the first game that the entire squad has played together for the year.

Both teams wore sparkly pink ribbons during the match in tribute to Chloe Jeffries, a young netball fan who was taken too soon. Chloe’s favourite colour was pink and the gesture served as a heartfelt acknowledgement of her love for netball. The club’s thoughts are with her family and loved ones.

WHAT WE SAW

The Vixens made an immediate statement in the opening quarter, starting the game with speed and precision through the midcourt to establish early scoreboard control. Efficient centre pass conversion and strong defensive pressure allowed the Vixens to take a 21-14 lead into the first break.

The Vixens’ attacking unit fired-up up early, converting 13 of 16 centre pass opportunities in the 1st quarter to set the tone for the match. Sophie Garbin was a standout performer in the goal circle, finishing with an impressive 45 goals from 49 attempts at 92% accuracy.

Kiera Austin also played an important role in attack, providing movement and versatility inside the shooting circle. Defensively, the Vixens applied strong pressure across the court, with Rudi Ellis contesting strongly throughout the match and disrupting the Mavericks’ shooting opportunities.

The Mavericks mounted a spirited comeback in the 3rd quarter, capitalising on momentum shifts to close the margin. Key positional changes proved influential as the Vixens worked to regain control, with Kate Moloney moving to the wing and Zara Walters being brought onto the court.

As they headed into the 4th quarter, the Vixens kept their composure and were efficient with their centre passes. Their discipline in attack from earlier in the game returned and helped them close out the match with a comfortable 6-point win.

FROM THE VIXENS

Following the match, Vixens Head Coach Di Honey said:

"We were really pleased with the way that we started the game. Our first quarter set the tone with great speed on the ball and some really strong attacking connections across the court. The Mavericks challenged us in the 3rd quarter but the group showed great composure to respond and regain momentum late in the game. This win gives the team plenty of confidence heading into Round 1."

WHAT'S NEXT

The Melbourne Vixens will officially begin their 2026 Suncorp Super Netball season on Saturday, 15th March, as they travel to Nissan Arena in Brisbane to face the Queensland Firebirds at 2:00 pm AEDT.
