The Sargeant-McKinnis Cup was up for grabs as traditional rivals Melbourne Vixens and NSW Swifts went head-to-head in a mammoth Round 5 Suncorp Super Netball clash at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney.

Despite entering the contest at opposing ends of the ladder, the two sides treated fans to an instant classic in the latest instalment of the rivalry, however it was the Vixens that prevailed, proving too polished when the game was on the line to claim a hard-fought 66-59 victory.

As many expected it was the Vixens that found the early break in the game, with the reigning premier racing out to a three-goal advantage within the opening four minutes of the contest, moving the ball at will and looking a class above.

As both sides settled it was goal for goal for much of the term from there, and despite what felt like all the momentum for the Swifts, the Vixens were kept in it by the brilliance of Sophie Garbin and Kiera Austin, both of whom shot at 100 per cent for the quarter.

Grace Nweke was on the end of some long feeds from her midcourters, but failed to capitalise, and the Swifts once again found a break as Austin fired home the first of the Suncorp Super Shots for the term.

Vixens enjoyed the ascendency at the break as Austin made another two-pointer and made the most of the final centre pass to lead 18-16 as the two sides went into the huddle.

SECOND QUARTER

There was plenty of similarity to the first term as the second got underway, with the Vixens getting out to a game-high 23-18 lead early, before the Swifts went on a run of their own, scoring five of the next six to get back to one behind and force a Vixens tactical time out.

With all the momentum the home side continued to forge ahead, taking the lead at 26-25 for the first time in the contest as Nweke converted to rapturous applause from the crowd, before opening up a three-goal lead at 31-28.

Austin ensured the Vixens got back to within one goal late, but the Swifts held their nerve, as Nweke fired home the final score of the half to hand her side a 34-32 advantage at the main break, with the home side having won the second quarter 18-14.

THIRD QUARTER

They would carry on with it, too, as they headed back on court in the third term, widening the gap to a game-high six goals in the opening stages, but in the blink of an eye the Vixens pulled the deficit back to one following five straight scores, in tune with the ebbing and flowing nature of the game.

It would be back and forth for much of the remaining minutes in the third term, however a pair of two-point conversions from Austin late, combined with a pair of two-point misses at the other end for Nweke, saw things levelled up at 48 apiece as the umpires blew the whistle to signify the end of the quarter.

A tied game entering the final term felt fitting, with the two sides having both enjoyed periods of dominance throughout the bout without being able to fully put their opponent away.

FINAL QUARTER

But the Vixens, as they had done a week before against the Lightning, found an extra gear with the game on the line, and set the final quarter ablaze.

Three unanswered goals to start the term foreshadowed the mood the visitors were in, and while the Swifts quickly got back to level pegging, the Vixens put the foot down for good soon after, scoring 14 of the next 17 goals to open up a game-high 11-goal lead with two minutes remaining, putting the contest to bed.

Whyte found her range to convert two super shots late, reeling the margin back in to seven, however it proved futile as the clock expired, condemning the Swifts to a fourth loss from five rounds.

There were contributors across the court for the Vixens in the win, with skipper Kate Moloney named MVP following a 22 feed, one intercept and one deflection effort, racking up 86 net points, while the likes of Garbin (102 net points, 47 goals) and Austin (56 net points, 25 feeds) were elite also.

It makes it five straight wins for the Vixens to open their premiership defence in 2026 and sets up a mouthwatering clash at John Cain Arena on Saturday night, where the reigning premier will face their closest challenger in the Thunderbirds, in what shapes as a blockbuster clash.
