Match Report: Vixens remain undefeated

SSN Round 4 review

The Vixens' winning record continues, defeating West Coast Fever by nine goals 75-66 at John Cain Arena in Kids Round.

Facing off against her former side, Olivia Lewis' injection into the game put Jhaniele Fowler through her paces with the goal keeper competing exceptionally well in the air.

Fowler and Sasha Glasgow were on fire early racing out to a three-goal lead. But the influence of Kiera Austin (29 from 35) was hard to stop, the goal attack backing up her Round 3 performance with a handy three super shots to gift her side a six-goal lead at quarter time.

The second term began with the same intensity as the Fever worked in overdrive to peg back the margin. Courtney Bruce and Stacey Francis-Bayman picked up a wealth of loose ball while Fowler dominated under the post to snatch the lead. The introduction of Rahni Samason in the circle changed the momentum, with Samason slotting four goals straight to swing the lead back the Vixens' way heading into the main break.

Mwai Kumwenda (32 from 36) found her way back onto the court in the third quarter while Liz Watson (25 goal assists) and Kate Moloney provided the ball on a silver platter. The defensive pressure increased as Lewis showed her dare with an impressive intercept, while Emily Mannix created deflections as we pushed to an eight-goal lead.

It was a blistering final term as we looked to put the foot down. Kate Eddy nullified the influence of Verity Simmons while Rudi Ellis made her way into the game for the Fever in an attempt to shut down Kumwenda and Austin. The changes did not seem to faze the shooting pair, driving it home to secure our fourth consecutive win.

Head coach Simone McKinnis was happy with the four quarter performance from her side.

“We just knew it would take the work across four quarters, but I thought we had some super performances across the court for us. I was just really pleased that we maintained the workrate for the four quarters.”

We will enjoy a couple of days off before heading to the Sunshine Coast to take on the Lightning on Saturday at USC Stadium.
