In her twelfth year at the club, midcourt star Kate Moloney will lead the Melbourne Vixens as captain in season 2024, supported by vice-captain Emily Mannix in her tenth year in navy.

Last year Moloney became the first Vixen to play 150 matches for the club, adding the historic milestone to a long list of team and individual accolades including two Vixens championships, and claiming Commonwealth Games gold with the Australian Diamonds in Birmingham in 2022.

Moloney has captained or co-captained the club since 2017, and the 31-year-old’s exceptional leadership, physical endurance and work rate see her continually held in high esteem by teammates and opponents alike.

Mannix found form rivalling her career-best in 2023, playing her 100th national league match in Round 12 and named runner up in the club’s MVP award.

The 29-year-old defender is one of the most consistent athletes in the competition, frequently standing up in key moments – including taking a crucial intercept in the dying seconds of the 2022 preliminary final, sending her side to the grand final – and credited with supporting her teammates on and off court as a beloved character in the Vixens environment.

“It means so much to be named captain for season 2024, it’s always such an honour and something that I never take for granted to lead this amazing club,” said Moloney.

“I think the great thing about Em and I is that we do really complement each other, and I think the way that we go about our leadership, there are similarities but there are things we both bring that are really different.”

“Emily brings so much fun to our team, she has so many amazing connections with everyone in our group, and the way that she has so much care and love for our club is something that I think is so special.”

“To be at the club for 10 years now is something very special and I do not take it for granted… to be named vice-captain and work alongside Kate to help lead this team is something I’m really looking forward to,” said Mannix.

“Kate is a fierce leader – she’s someone that does what she says she’s going to do, she leads by example, she loves connecting with everyone and makes an effort with everyone.”
