Melbourne’s newly redeveloped State Netball Centre will host the Suncorp Team Girls Cup in 2022, thanks to support from the Victorian Government.
The official Suncorp Super Netball pre-season tournament will be played from Friday 25 February to Sunday 27 February 2022.
It will mark the first time the Suncorp Team Girls Cup has been played since 2019, after it was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tournament will be the Melbourne Vixens' first opportunity to test out their new combinations in front of fans at their new home.
Netball Australia Executive General Manager Suncorp Super Netball, Events and Commercial Adam Richardson thanked the Victorian Government for their support in the Suncorp Team Girls Cup.
“As a result of the pandemic, Melbourne has hosted just 10 Suncorp Super Netball matches over the past two seasons and we are delighted to bring elite netball back to our Victorian fans,” Richardson said.
“Fans will get a first-hand look at the new-look teams and line-ups ahead of the sixth edition of Suncorp Super Netball. A big emphasis will be placed on encouraging fans, spectators and viewers to ‘Show Your Colours’ and celebrate the electric teams in this league.
“We are incredibly grateful for the Victorian Government’s support of the Suncorp Team Girls Cup and broader commitment to netball holistically.”
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula said.
“Victorians love their netball and the state-of-the-art facilities at Parkville provides the perfect place for Super Netball to return this year – showcasing Melbourne as Australia’s sporting capital.
“We invest in bringing significant sporting events to our state because they boost our economy and deliver amazing experiences for Victorian fans.”
Suncorp Executive General Manager of Brand and Marketing Mim Haysom said the Suncorp Team Girls Cup would provide the Victorian netball community with a much-needed boost.
“After two years of interrupted netball seasons, it will be wonderful to see the Suncorp Super Netball teams in one location, battling it out for the Team Girls Cup and showcasing everything we love about SSN,” Haysom said.
“Suncorp is thrilled to work with Netball Australia again to stage this pre-season tournament and see live netball return to Melbourne.”
