The last time the Melbourne Vixens met the NSW Swifts was Round 3, and after letting their lead slip away in the final quarter to finish with a draw, there is no doubt the Vixens will be looking for a win this Sunday in Round 9 of Suncorp Super Netball!
Vixens’ defender, Emily Mannix starred during the last encounter, finishing with 10 deflections, three intercepts, seven gains and four rebounds, while Liz Watson was awarded Most Valuable Player with 23 goal assists and 35 feeds.
Mannix said the team has learnt from the draw early in the season.
“We’ve come a long way since that round – with the draw and how we were up and we let that slip away,” Mannix said.
“I think it came at a good time to set us up for the rest of the season and not let that sort of thing happen again.”
The Vixens sit in second-position on the ladder, 10 points ahead of the seventh-placed Swifts. Mannix doesn’t believe the ladder positions will reflect the intensity of the match.
“Obviously the Swifts are a great team, and we drew with them last time, so it will be a tough game,” Mannix said.
“I don’t think the ladder really depicts that – us sitting second and them sitting second last, I think it’s going to be a really close game.”
It will be an intense battle in the attacking end, with both teams players boasting attackers in the top eight of the competition.
Swift’s Wing Attack, Paige Hadley, leads the competition for centre pass receives with 190, with Vixens Goal Attack, Tegan Philip only one behind her on 189.
Liz Watson leads the way in the competition for goal assists with 149, whilst Hadley and Maddy Proud split the statistic evenly with 97 and 96 assists each.
The shooters are also evenly matched, with the Swifts Sam Wallace third in the league for goals with 298, while Vixen, Mwai Kumwenda is fourth with 279.
The match will also determine the holder of the Sargeant-McKinnis Cup, with the scores from both games played during the season determining the winner.
With the scores dead-locked in the first match, it all comes down to Sunday’s game.
The match will be played at 3pm on Sunday 23 April at Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney, with the game broadcast live on Telstra TV and the Netball Live App.
Live on Telstra TV, beginning at 3pm AEST, Sunday 23 April.
