Madi Robinson will lead the Melbourne Vixens as captain of the Victorian based team, with Netball Victoria announcing its leadership group for the 2016 ANZ Championship season at the RACV Club in Melbourne today.
A dual Liz Ellis Diamond Award winner, Robinson, 28, is widely respected as an influential leader both on and off the court.
The appointment of Robinson, who will be supported by co vice-captains Geva Mentor and Kate Moloney, represents the start of a new era for the Vixens following the retirement of Bianca Chatfield at the end of season 2015, with Chatfield leading the team as sole or co-captain with Sharelle McMahon (who retired in 2013) for the first eight years of the competition.
“I’m always filled with enormous pride and passion when I represent Victoria in netball,” Robinson said.
“To be named captain of the Melbourne Vixens, it’s a huge privilege for me and I am so grateful for the opportunity to lead this incredible group of people and talented athletes.”
The experience gained in playing a leading role in the Australian Diamonds gold medal campaign at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will stand Robinson in good stead with a hungry, but young Vixens team.
Recognised as one of the best wing attacks in the world, Robinson’s maturity in pressure situations at the highest level and her ability to lead by example for her teammates has provided her with the confidence to take on the role of captain.
“As an athlete and a person I have always prided myself on my consistency and strong work ethic, and I hope to be able to empower my fellow teammates to get the best out of themselves, while continually growing and learning about this position myself.”
Pre-season training began for the Vixens in early January with the team set for an opening round blockbuster clash against the NSW Swifts in Sydney on April 1.
“The effort and attitude of the group during pre-season has been fantastic and I’m eager to be a part of what this group can achieve together,” Robinson said.
Robinson is expected to make her return to the court in April after suffering a season ending knee injury in Round 5 of the 2015 ANZ Championship against the West Coast Fever in Perth.
The leadership group is nominated by the Melbourne Vixens playing group in consultation with coaching staff, and will be the official playing leaders for the 2016 ANZ Championship season.
The appointment of Mentor and Moloney as joint vice-captains brings an exciting blend of international level leadership experience and strong young leadership talent to the group.
