As the Melbourne Vixens make their way to Brisbane for Suncorp Super Netball’s #TeamGirls Cup, a few new faces will join them in the squad of 12 - one being Sacha McDonald.
A pivotal member of both the 19/U Victorian state team and the Victorian Fury, the goaler has recently been selected to travel with the Melbourne Vixens to the pre-season competition.
“It’s been a bit of a challenge with all the overlapping programs this year, but I’ve really loved every minute of it,” McDonald said.
“It’s been hard juggling on court and off court with university, but it’s been amazing, and the support staff have really welcomed me with all the programs, so I’m just grateful to play in all three at the moment.”
McDonald said she was shocked when she received the news that she was heading to Brisbane with the Vixens.
“It was 10 minutes before training started when I got the call and it was totally out of the blue for me, but it’s something that I’ve worked towards, being able to train with the Vixens, so to get that call was really exciting.”
“I’m just looking forward to the weekend.”
It’s a busy time for McDonald, also captaining the 19/U state team who are defending their nationals title and entering her second season with the Victorian Fury, after making her debut last year.
After a strong season in 2018, with the Fury finishing minor premiers, McDonald said the team in 2019 is also a strong one.
“I think our team is coming together well.
“With Di [Honey, Victorian Fury head coach] and her experience with the Vixens, I think that we’re in a position to have a lot of success this year.”
The Melbourne Vixens, along with Sacha and squad members Lara Dunkley and Allie Smith will compete in the #TeamGirls Cup beginning Friday 8 March.
All games will be available to watch on the Netball Live app, with Sunday’s grand final being broadcast live on channel 9.
