Vixens go down in GIANT clash

A second half comeback was not enough to see the Vixens take the win in their match against GIANTS Netball, with the visiting team taking the win 60-58.

The second v third match was set up to be a close one, with the Vixens and GIANTS providing some thrilling contests over the course of Suncorp Super Netball this year.

The Vixens were in front early in the match until a strong GIANTS defence helped their team to the lead, which they would maintain for majority of the game.

With the lead extending to six at the main break, the Vixens rallied to claim their only bonus point for the match, levelling the scores late in the third quarter and setting up yet another close finish.

Nothing separated the two teams in the final term, with both teams going goal-for-goal until the dying minutes of the match, with the GIANTS scoring two in a row to secure the win.

Vixens coach, Simone McKinnis, said she was pleased with how the team fought back in the second half.

“It was pretty tight. We just couldn’t get that turnover ball in that last quarter that we needed. It was hard work for us in the first half, but I thought we came out much stronger and better in the second half,” McKinnis said.

“There’s not much in a lot of these games and especially against a team like GIANTS you’ve got to score off the ball that you get.”

McKinnis said although she would prefer the win, the loss helps identify areas that the team needs to work on in the lead in to finals.

“Being in these tough matches, it identifies all those little areas that you have to work on and that’s not just the physical or the tactical, that’s the mental, being in situations where you have to work your way through it,” McKinnis said.

“If you’re going to go and play finals there’s no better preparation than to be playing some tough matches leading into it.”

The loss sees the Vixens move to third on the ladder, narrowly behind the GIANTS in second, and next week’s rivals, the West Coast Fever, in first.

Next week, the Vixens celebrate coach Simone McKinnis' 100th game.
