Full court defence key to Vixens securing win

The Vixens will look to make it two-from-two when they meet last year’s premiers, the Queensland Firebirds, again this weekend in Round 11 of Suncorp Super Netball.

The Vixens were dominant winners the last time the two teams played in Round 5, defeating the reigning premiers 66-50.

Vixens defender, Jo Weston, was instrumental in the team’s win, finishing the game with three gains and keeping her opponents’ goals to single-figures in an MVP-winning performance.

Mwai Kumwenda and Tegan Philip were also on fire, shooting at 94% combined for the match.

Kumwenda was the highest scoring player on court with 41 goals, even scoring more than the Firebirds shooting machine, Romelda Aiken.

The Vixens will be looking to continue their form and claim eight wins in a row to cement a spot in the first Super Netball finals series.

Sitting on top of the ladder with just four rounds to go, the Vixens are a point clear from second-placed GIANTS Netball.

The Firebirds will come out hungry for the win, with their season and chance to play finals on the line.

The Firebirds and Magpies are currently tussling it out for the fourth spot in the final series, with just four points separating the two teams, so a win for the interstaters is crucial.

Vixens Captain, Kate Moloney, said the team is very aware that the Firebirds will come out strong.

“We know it will be really tough,” Moloney said.

“They really need to make wins now for a place in the finals, so we are expecting them to come out firing.”

The key match-up for the game will be between Aiken and Vixens defender, Emily Mannix.

But Moloney said that the defensive pressure needs to be put-on all through the court to restrict Aiken’s goals.

“We really need to put-on defensive pressure right from Goal Shooter,” Moloney said.

“If they [Firebirds] can move the ball quickly it makes it really hard for our defence down there.

“We need a full-court defensive effort to slow the ball down and give our defenders a chance.”

The Vixens will host the Firebirds in a double-header on Saturday 6 May at 7pm.
