Forget Game of Thrones, Melbourne Arena will host the greatest battle of the week when the Vixens take on GIANTS Netball on Sunday afternoon.
While the crowd will be tickled pink supporting Breast Cancer Network Australia, the fierce battle expected on court won’t be as pretty.
The GIANTS have always been tough opponents for the Vixens, having beaten them in three of their four meetings. But with new line ups for both teams, the Vixens are confident in their combinations which saw them defeat the Firebirds by 12 in the opening round last week.
Defender Jo Weston has the task of playing on GIANTS’ goaler, Jo Harten who finds herself a new goaling partner in Diamonds captain Caitlin Bassett, a combination the Vixens didn’t face in any of their pre-season games.
“It will be tough, it always is. We’ve worked on what we did last week and watched GIANTS’ round 1 game, including edits of certain plays, so we feel really prepared going into this week.
“With the inclusion of CBass into the ring, it does look a bit different, but Jo (Harten) and Keira (Austin) have been in the GIANTS system for a little while so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see that as an option.
“With the likes of Jamie-Lee and Kim Green, we always have to keep an eye on that and it’s something we’ve looked at fine tuning this week; knowing what their attacking line likes to do. It’s also Kim’s 200th so there’s a lot for them to play for.”
The Melbourne Vixens are proud to partner with Breast Cancer Network Australia to help ensure every Australian diagnosed with breast cancer receives the very best support, information, treatment and care.
To help raise awareness, all sporting clubs around Australia are encouraged to hold a ‘Pink Sports Day', and for the Vixens’ Round 2 match against GIANTS Netball, that’s exactly what we’re doing.
We’re encouraging everyone coming to the game to wear pink to support the cause.
