The Melbourne Vixens will take part in another top-of-the-ladder clash this weekend, when they play the second-placed GIANTS Netball in Canberra for Round 12 of Suncorp Super Netball.

With finals just three games away, the match is crucial for the make-up of the top four.

Just one point separates the two teams, with the Vixens on nine wins, one draw and one loss, and the GIANTS on nine wins and two losses.

The Sunshine Coast Lightning are also competing for a top two finish, just one point below the GIANTS with eight wins, 2 losses and a draw.

With the top three so condensed, the match could determine the team who claims the minor premiership, and crucially, hosts the first semi-final.

The experience of the GIANTS defensive line-up coming up against the Vixens consistent attack will be a thrilling contest.

Samantha Poolman, Goal Keeper for the GIANTS, has had a breakthrough season, pairing-up with experienced campaigner Rebecca Bulley in Goal Defence.

Vixens’ shooters Mwai Kumwenda and Tegan Philip, will have another tough task against the duo, however with their accuracy the highest in the league, along with the Lightning, it will prove to be an enticing match-up.

The last time the two teams met was in Round 6 of the competition, with the Vixens being the first team to defeat the GIANTS for the season.

The Vixens fired early, however the GIANTS claimed a minor lead during the second quarter, before the Vixens again rallied to win the match 59-51.

Vixens midcourter, Liz Watson, had a fantastic game when they last met, finishing with 24 goal assists, 43 circle feeds and two intercepts.

Watson said it will be business as usual for the team this weekend.

“I think it’s great to be on top of the ladder, that’s where we want to be, but nothing’s changed since the start of the year,” Watson said.

“Each game is very tough and very close.”

“We really need to take this week very seriously and the next week, and the next week, to put us in the best possible position for finals.”

The match will take place at AIS Arena in Canberra on Sunday 14 May at 1pm.
