Facing 2015 defending champions the Queensland Firebirds, the Vixens head into their third match of the season hunting this year’s prestigious title.

The two teams’ last competitive meeting was in Round 11 last year, where the Vixens suffered a nine-goal setback by the current crown holders.

Keep your eyes on the Melbourne Vixens’ defensive third, where import players Geva Mentor (GK) and Romelda Aiken (GS) go face-to-face.

The Vixens will be looking to shutdown the Firebirds shooters early on in the match with their shooting power coming from Aiken and Gretel Tippett, one of their oppositions strongest assets.

Coming off the back of their first win of the season against the Adelaide Thunderbirds last weekend, Melbourne Vixens captain Madi Robinson admits that this weekends match will be challenging.

“We understand it’s going to be a really tough match against the Firebirds on Saturday, they’re a quality outfit across the entire court.

“We took a lot out of Sundays match with some good quality netball being played, however, we also had some fades in the game that we need to rectify, otherwise the Firebirds will punish us on the scoreboard if we don’t make it count when we have the ball.”

Speaking about the vibe amongst the team now that they’re two rounds into the season, Robinson added, “The vibe has completely changed from round one, going from a 15-goal loss to a 15-goal win. I think it’s been great for the team’s confidence to be able to play the style of netball that we want, we have also had a majority of the team get court time, which has been a great boost for the girls, hopefully we can try to secure another win this weekend.”

With two rounds already under their belt, a home crowd advantage and a mix of familiar and new faces, the Vixens will be a force to be reckoned with on Melbourne’s home stage.

Last competitive meeting: Rd 11, 2015: Melbourne Vixens lost to the Queensland Firebirds 45-54.
