Match preview: Melbourne Vixens v Adelaide Thunderbirds, round nine

The Melbourne Vixens will be hunting their fifth victory over the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Round Nine of the ANZ Championship at Margaret Court Arena on Saturday night.

After defeating West Coast Fever last weekend in Perth, Vixens Head Coach Simone McKinnis said, "It was a great performance but there is still room for improvement. We are coming up against a team that are desperate for a win, so we will have to find even more from each other on Saturday.

"The Thunderbirds have been playing some good netball even though they have not had the results in wins. It’s an important game for us and an opportunity to really work across all four quarters.”

Switching home courts from Hisense Arena to Margaret Court Arena, the Vixens will be looking to hold onto their previous Round Two win [59-44] to the Thunderbirds in their Saturday night back-to-back blockbuster.

With the Thunderbirds yet to find a consistent line-up through their mid-court, the Vixens will be concentrating on executing their game plan regardless of the match-ups.

Captain Madi Robinson will be the Vixens’ powerful weapon, as the Thunderbirds will struggle to find a WD to shutdown Robinson’s speed and superior ball handling skills on the wing.

After an impressive start to the season, Vixens youngster Alice Teague-Neeld should get the better of Thunderbirds defender Kate Shimmin in the goal attack and goal defence battle.

Back in Round Two, defender Jo Weston was able to successfully eliminate Erin Bell [Thunderbirds GA]. Keep your eyes on the pair as it will be a pivotal match-up.

Currently sitting in third place on the Australian Conference ladder, a win on Saturday will hand the Vixens much needed breathing space before they head to the Gold Coast in Round 10 to face defending champions the Queensland Firebirds.

Last competitive meeting: Rd 2, 2016: Melbourne Vixens won 59-44 to the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
