Melbourne Vixens Head Coach, Simone McKinnis OAM was crowned the Joyce Brown Coach of the Year at the Australian Netball Awards at Melbourne Town Hall on Saturday night.
McKinnis led the Melbourne Vixens superbly in the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball season, with the Vixens claiming the minor premiership, with a winning percentage across the season of just under 80%.
McKinnis was honoured to receive the award from her former coach and mentor, Joyce Brown.
“I am fortunate to have been coached by Joyce and to have her support me in my coaching role at the Vixens,” said McKinnis.
The former Melbourne Phoenix star was ‘exceptionally proud’ of the team for their performance this season.
“I was exceptionally proud, I really enjoyed the year, I had a great bunch of girls that just wanted to get out there and give it their best.”
Despite not finishing the year the way they wanted, McKinnis sees a lot of upside in the Vixens roster.
“I think they got a taste of what they can achieve, and I think they certainly got a feel and a belief of what they can do on court together, so the signs are really good and hopefully having learnt a lot in the finals series, we can go onto the better things next year.”
Across the 2017 season, the Melbourne Vixens recorded 11 wins, one draw and two losses.
