The Melbourne Vixens are set to take on the Sunshine Coast Lightning this Saturday in the Suncorp Super Netball Major Semi Final.
The Vixens secured the home final and second chance with their 68-42 win over the West Coast Fever in the last round of the home and away season.
Vixens Head Coach, Simone McKinnis, said she is pleased to be hosting the Semi Final this weekend.
“It’s great to have a home crowd,” said McKinnis.
“It is a big match, so it will be nice to be at home and not have to travel, particularly having come across to Perth last weekend, it will be nice,” said McKinnis.
Nothing separates the two teams on the Suncorp Super Netball ladder, with both the Vixens and Lightning finishing with 11 wins, a draw and two losses.
Playing twice throughout the season, the Lightning and the Vixens finished with one win each, with the Vixens claiming the most recent victory in Round 10.
Vixens shooter, Mwai Kumwenda, was dominant in the 70-59 victory, shooting 40 goals at 100 per cent accuracy, earning her the Nissan Most Valuable Player award.
Midcourter, Liz Watson, also continued her formidable season form, finishing with 26 goal assists, whilst Emily Mannix, tasked with the job on Lightning’s Caitlin Bassett, produced three intercepts and four deflections.
However, McKinnis said she expects the game to be different to the last time the two teams met.
“I think the Lightning are a fantastic team and they’ve certainly been playing really, really well and I know that it will be a different game to when we played them in Melbourne where we had a really good win,” said McKinnis.
“Geva [Mentor] is playing really well and [Laura] Langman, and just those strengths throughout the court, but they’re working really well as a team.”
A win this weekend would see the Vixens host the Grand Final in a fortnight – the first in Melbourne since their premiership in 2014.
A loss would mean the Vixens play the following week in the Preliminary Final against the winner of the Minor Semi Final, between the Giants and Magpies.
The Major Semi Final Vixens v Lightning clash will begin at 4pm (AEST) at Margaret Court Arena, and will be televised live on 9Gem.
