The 2017/18 Australian Diamonds Squad has been announced and the Melbourne Vixens feature prominently on the list of 18 selected – with five of our players named.
Emily Mannix, Kate Moloney, Tegan Philip, Liz Watson, and Jo Weston will form part of the 2017/18 Diamonds Squad, after strong and consistent performances in the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball League.
This is the first time Melbourne Vixens Captain, Kate Moloney and Defender, Emily Mannix have been named in the squad, with both starring on court this season for the Vixens.
The Netball Quad Series and Constellation Cup teams were also named, with Philip, Weston and (Liz) Watson named in the Quad team, and Weston and (Liz) Watson also named in the Constellation Cup.
It is great to see Philip return to the Australian team after making a comeback this year following the rupture of her anterior cruciate ligament in 2016.
Diamonds Head Coach, Lisa Alexander spoke of how difficult the selection process was this year, after so many athletes impressed in the Suncorp Super Netball League.
Netball Victoria High Performance General Manager, Rebekah Webster said it was great to see so many Vixens named in the national team.
“We have such a talented and hardworking list and it is wonderful to see half of our playing group make national selection,” said Webster.
“The girls named all really impressed this season, with consistent strong performances and we are really thrilled to see them feature in the squad.
“It is particularly nice to see Tegan selected again for the first time since 2014, after returning from injury this season. She has worked so hard to get back to her best and I think she had one of her strongest seasons yet this year,” said Webster.
“Having Kate and Emily also make the team for the first time is really exciting too,” said Webster.
Weston – who was named the Player of the Finals at the club’s Sharelle McMahon Medal awards night last Friday – returns to the squad and also Quad and Constellation Cup teams after strong past performances, as does Watson, who was crowned the Vixens Most Valuable Player – Sharelle McMahon Medalist – for 2017.
