The Melbourne Vixens have been recognised at the highest level, with six players being selected in the 2018-2019 Samsung Diamonds squad.
Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander revealed on Sunday that Renae Ingles, Emily Mannix, Kate Moloney, Tegan Philip, Liz Watson and Jo Weston are among the squad of 17.
Watson, Weston, Philip, Mannix and Moloney were all members of the Diamonds squad in 2017-2018, with Watson and Weston going on to compete for Australia at the Commonwealth Games in April.
Weston said that she is excited to be named in the Diamonds squad, along with her Vixens teammates.
“To be selected alongside five other Vixens, that’s probably what I’m more excited about – that all our starting seven (other than Mwai Kumwenda, who plays for Malawi) have been selected.”
Meanwhile Wing Defence Renae Ingles makes her return to the squad for the first time since 2015.
A 67-cap career that was put on hold for the birth of her twins, the Commonwealth Games and Netball World Cup gold medallist said she started crying when Alexander told her the news.
“When she said you’re in the squad I actually started crying straight away – this has obviously been a whirlwind for me.”
“Nine weeks ago, this was so far from my reality. I thought my days of playing for Australia or being in the Australian squad were long gone,” Ingles said.
“Whilst it’s all so exciting and I hope I get the opportunity to wear the green and gold again, it’s about the business end of the season for the Vixens now.”
Caitlin Thwaites, a former Melbourne Vixens player and product of the Netball Victoria pathway, has also been selected in the squad.
