Changes to the Constellation Cup team opens door for vixens

Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens are thrilled with the news that 2017 Melbourne Vixens Captain, Kate Moloney has been selected in the Samsung Diamonds Constellation Cup team.

Moloney will now join fellow Vixens, Jo Weston and Liz Watson in the team and also Emily Mannix, who will remain in with Sharni Layton (Magpies Netball) continuing her leave of absence from the sport.

The young Vixens team, led by Moloney in 2017, exceeded expectations with a strong season –– that saw them finish just short of a Grand Final appearance – and impressed national selectors with five players being named in the 2017/18 Diamonds Squad.

Moloney is yet to debut for the Diamonds, after being named in the squad for the first time in June.

She is thrilled with the opportunity to represent Australia and said she learnt a lot on the recent Diamonds camp.

“I really enjoyed the camp, I was able to learn a lot, and help the girls in preparations for the Quad Series,” said Moloney.

Named as a member of Australia’s Fast5 team, Moloney’s focus until the news of her call up for the Constellation Cup had been on representing the nation in that team, and looking to secure the elusive Fast5 gold medal. However, the early call up is most welcome and there is no doubt Moloney will relish the chance to gain some more international experience.

The Samsung Diamonds will travel with 13 athletes for the Constellation Cup, naming a final 12 prior to each test.

Diamonds Coach, Lisa Alexander said in the lead-up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games it was important to see more options.

“With limited test matches prior to the Commonwealth Games, national selectors and I want to see further options through the midcourt, in addition to our two goal attacks already coming in to the team,” said Alexander.

Victorian, Caitlyn Nevins who plays for the Queensland Firebirds also received a call up for the Constellation Cup.

“As [Diamonds] squad members, Caitlyn and Kate have already been training alongside the team to assist in all preparations, and will be ready to play their role for the team,” said Alexander.
